Prevention over Punishment, a Core Value for The Jade Project
Upon hearing Jade’s story, a common but understandable first reaction for people is one of anger. When an animal is harmed, especially one as gentle and trusting as Jade, our feelings can be shaken deep down. We may feel that justice and accountability are the only ways to make sure that it never happens again. Those certainly were feelings that our family felt.
As we worked through the healing process alongside Jade however, we found ourselves asking a question that became a core value for The Jade Project…What actually stops this from happening again; not just to Jade, but to every cat?
Looking Past The Moment Of Harm
While punishment can feel like an appropriate focus…it only works in response to harm after it occurs. Prevention is a focus that works to ensure harm does not happen in the first place, which is a very important distinction.
When it comes to acts of cruelty towards animals, it is not often that it comes from nowhere. It can come from many things such as fear, frustration, lack of education, or even in some cases a learned behavior. These factors do not excuse the behavior, but they can help explain it and…hopefully help us understand ways that we can help to stop it.
Maintaining a focus on punishment forces us into a position of reaction only. When we focus on prevention, we can build something better for the future.
Creating Safer Communities Through Education
Let’s talk for a moment about one of the most powerful tools we have…awareness. It’s simple, people are more likely to make compassionate choices when they understand things like:
How to keep cats out of their yard in a safe and humane way
The best ways to coexist with neighborhood animals
The lasting consequences of acts of cruelty
Because not everyone has been taught these things, a lack of this knowledge can, and often does, lead to the decision to harm and animal.
At The Jade Project, we share humane solutions, practical tips and real stories not just so that this additional education can inform…but so that it can hopefully transform future situations and prevent harm from happening in the first place.
Finding A Kind Of Change That Lasts
While it may seem a bit counterintuitive, because compassion is a stronger deterrent than fear, lasting change does not tend to come from fear of punishment. Instead it comes from connection between an animal and a human. Helping someone see that an animal is a living being, one that is capable of trust, pain and joy, has a result that it becomes harder for them to make the decision to harm them.
When an entire community begins to value this type of kindness, the natural accountability grows organically from within, not just from rule enforcement or consequences. This will create a lasting change that we can all be proud of.
Saving More Than Just One Life
A focus on prevention protects not just one cat, but many cats. Prevention of cruelty towards cats puts humans on a path towards:
Reduction of harm in the future, before it begins
Providing better choices to people in moments of frustration
The creation of a neighborhood where cats and people coexist with more peace
Every conversation we have with others, every resource we share, and every single moment of raised awareness can add up to a very powerful result.
What Has Jade’s Story Taught Us?
In addition to resilience, Jade’s recovery gave us direction. While healing alongside her we were reminded that, while we can’t go back in time and undo what happened to her, we can take steps to shape what happens next.
Because we believe there is hope for a different future, we at The Jade Project chose to offer education and resources that focus on prevention, which offers something punishment alone cannot.
We believe in a future where:
Fewer animals are harmed
Communities choose compassion first
Stories like Jade’s become more and more rare
We believe this future can be accomplished not because we reacted more harshly, but because we helped people choose differently from the very start.
Prevention…How Can You Take Part?
It may start small…but it starts with all of us. Here are some ways you can help:
Seek out opportunities to learn about humane ways to handle conflicts…and then share them
Openly speak with others about kindness and about accountability
Speak up when something feels wrong instead of staying silent
Find an organization that prioritizes education and awareness and give them your support
Remember, every action and every voice matters, and that together we can build something stronger than a society that is based on reaction. Instead, we can build a culture of action through compassion and through prevention.
